Check everything that John d said plus check every wire connection. 6 volt systems must have all connections clean including all battery,wires to and from switch, wire to starter. Since you washed it, I would suspect it is one of the connections, but definately look at the battery posts first, if there is black crud on them or terminals it won't do anything. I sometimes take a cruddy old screw driver and make sure the connection between post and terminal is good. scrape a clean place on the terminal and post and with the screw driver on both parts try to crank it, if it does you have found the dirty post.
