Well, unless my memory fails me, there are two hard lines connected to the reservoir to and from the pump. One is the suction side, the other the pressure/delivery side. I'd loosen the bolts that fasten the return line to the reservoir when the engine is running...it should squirt oil out....seems there is an O ring in there..might blow it out too if you loosen the bolts too much. I had my reservoir off last spring and rebuilt the valve assembly...put in an entire kit. I hooked it back up, the pump self primed and the air will self purge by working the tough control levers and cycling the system. It's really a very basic and simple set up. I never had my pump off.....but, if it is a gear pump like those I have messed with in the past....it isn't anything but two meshing gears....unless there are too much tolerance between the teeth....I don't see how it can't work, PROVIDING it is turning. I'd check to see if it making pressure by cracking a line. If not, check that woodruff key as mentioned.
