Mountain Cabin: A lot of offset tractors have been runing for years with grease in the steering gear box. The box was a poor design from the beginning thus most of them leaked oil by the time they were 10 years old. The oil ran down over axle, collected dust and front of tractor was always a mess. I have grease in all my offset tractors, filled them full at the beginning, put a grease zerk in the drain port, and each time I grease the tractors I add abot 6 pumps to the steering box. My 130 has 25 years on it now, and the steering has stayed tight. That is far better than it did when new. I works and works better than gear oil. You already have the best solution, I wouldn't try and fix it.
