I bought a carb kit from Central Tractor last year and was also underwhelmed. Broke the little brass idle jet like you mentioned in the article about rebuilding your 51, and the float still sticks on occasion. When I bought the tractor the ignition was incredibly far off (the #2 cylinder was firing almost where #1 should've been!). It smoked quite a bit and didn't have much power, but it did run. Setting the timing got rid of the smoke and added a lot of power, so I think the engine is basically in decent shape. I thought I'd have to replace the brakes but it turned out they were also just way out of adjustment (pedal bottomed out before the brakes took hold). But there are still lots of little things that need attention (like connections and cables).
