If you have to get a starter anyway why not get a 12v one as it will shurley last longer seeing what engine you are starting although the old 6v ones seem to do a good job but they have been known to bust the bendix and also the casting on the front of the starter so just get a 12v one to avoid problems down the road prices are the same in fact there is a place in MINN that has new ones for 115 pluss 15 for shipping. I have got some new 6v from him and am well satisfied as there is no core charge.
