Get the engine at TDC of the compression stroke on No. 1 cylinder. There is a mark(notch) on the front pulley and a pointer there. When the notch and pointer are aligned, you are at TDC. You can tell if it is the compression stroke by removing the plug in No. 1 cylinder (put the changeover lever in gas position) and turning the engine. When you get pressure it is on the compression stroke. If you have the hand crank, use that to turn the engine. If you don't have the hand crank, you can put the belt pulley in gear and put a couple of bolts in the flange and use a bar to turn the pulley which will turn the engine. Don't try this with the Mag in place, as the engine could fire and that would not be good if you had a bar attached to the pulley flange. Once you locate TDC of the compression stroke, turn the mag so the rotor points to No. 1 position and then mount it to the tractor. Make sure the mag drive is properly engaged. Assemble the mag with it rotated away from the engine. Once you have the mag mounted, rotate the engine one revolution until the pointer again is aligned just past TDC.(some engines have two marks on the front pulley flange. The first mark is TDC and the second is the timing mark for the mag.) Now loosen the mounting bolts on the mag and rotate it back toward the engine until you hear the impluse coupling in the mag click. Tighten the mounting bolts and the mag is now timed. You may now want to crank the engine another revolution or two to check that the timing is correct. The impluse in the mag should click just slightly after TDC never before TDC. Assemble the plug wires in counter clockwise direction firing order 1342 with No. 1 position being where your pointed the rotor when the engine was at TDC of No. 1 cylinder. Good luck!!
