When I was eight, Dad started showing me how to shut the gas on and off and had me memorize the gear pattern to our old John Deere MT (still remember it, even though next year it will be thirty years since I've seen that tractor). On MT the Power Lift controls live between the operator's legs. Dad had me push the clutch in every now and then while the tractor was off and securely parked. When I could fully depress the pedal all the way without hitting the control levers, the lessons began in earnest. I soloed the next year at age eleven. My daughter, who is seven and a half, can almost get the clutch all the way down on my Ford 2600...
