What kind of a charger are you using? The modern "computer controlled" versions can't tell when they're connected to a battery unless there's at least some charge in the battery to start with. It seems really silly to me to have a charger design that can't charge a completely dead battery...isn't that why we have battery chargers in the first place?

I have an old 4 amp transformer/rectifier type charger that will put out voltage regardless of what's connected to it, and use that to bring the battery up to where a more modern higher capacity charger can tell its there.

If you leave a know charging source connected for some perioed of time (a couple hours) and it still isn't taking a charge, its time for a new battery.
