As long as you are not going to use a magneto you can ignore the timing marks. Just get the distributor gear timed correctly to the adaptor gear. Turn the engine until you are cominmg up on #1 compression. Continue to turn until the TDC mark lines up. Install the distributor drive assembly. Remove the distributor from the adaptor. Find #1 marked on cap. Point rotor toward where #1 wire plugs in the cap. Install the distributor with the primary connector facing away from engine block. Remove rotor and dust cover. Rotate distributor Clockwise until primary connector is down about 45 degress. Watching the points, rotate the distributor back counterclockwise until the points just start to open. That should get you close enouigh to get it running so it can be timed with a light.
