Despite their good reputation I have no direct experience with Pertronix ignition. However it sounds like the module inside the distributor overheated. Possible causes: - 6 volt module as installed on a 12 volt system - Defective module (includes a 6 volt module mislabelled for 12 volts) - If the module uses the breaker plate for heat sinking, could be it's not tightly mated to the plate and/or heat conductive grease was not used. Incidentally using the wrong high voltage wires cannot harm the module. The worst wrong wires can do is reduce the spark output or mess up nearby radio reception.
