History, its your tractor and your choice if you wanna convert. If starting is a problem but you still wanna stay at 6 volts I recommend the biggest heaviest highest rated 6 volt battery that can physically fit into the battery compartment and the use of 00 Gauge battery n starter n ground cables. If converting to 12 volts you can EITHER keep the existing 6 volt coil (assuming its a distributor not a mag ignition) and add an external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor after the ignition switch ahead of the coil OR ELSE buy a full true 12 volt coil (some people call internally ballasted) no external ballast required. If you change polarity like from Pos to Neg ground (as most all alternators require) you would have to reverse ammeter leads or it reads bass ackwards. Wire the coil to match your ground i.e. if at Pos ground its lil + wires to distributor while if Neg ground its - wires to distributor with the other terminal, of course, getting voltage from the ignition switch/ballast. You can use a 12 volt genny or alternator, starter will work at 12 volts okay. John T
