I've not been into one of these, but I don't think it's possible to remove the axle carrier without removing the axle and carrier as an assembly. If you have a parts book, look at item 22, the rear axle bearing retainer. That holds the bearing in the axle carrier and keeps it from comming out. The inner race of the bearing rides against a shoulder (I think) and thus you can't pull the axle carrier off without first taking off the bearing retainer.
