If you pull the gear shift lever by removing the four bolts you will only be able to see the shifter yokes. Looking into the opening you should see a square opening in the yokes. This square opening indicates the transmission is in neutral. If you don't see this square opening, use a small prybar to move one or the other yokes to achieve the square. Try starting the tractor with the clutch pushed in and let it out slowly. If the engine still quits, you will have to remove the top cover to see what's wrong. To get the top cover off, you will have to either support the gas tank or remove it along with the rear support bracket. The support post for the steering wheel/shaft will have to be unbolted and supported too. Also, there are four 1/2" dowel pins that will have to be removed. They are threaded on the top with no nuts on them. You won't be able to get the cover off until you remove them. Use a 1/2" nut with a couple of flat or lock washers to start removing them. When you run out of threads, back off the nut and add more washers. Any more questions, just holler. Good Luck!

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
