thanks, for all the replies. The cam looks and feels good (smooth and not wore). I did not pull it. The exhaust valve is not stuck and seems to move up and down freely when I push on it with the heel of my hand. I did not get the head reworked as it ran well before the lifter broke. The main and rod bearings all looked in pretty good shape and the engine used no oil so I decided not to pull the head. I did have the oil pump rebuild. I replaced the lifter and push rod with original IH 350 parts that also broke. The last time I put it together I set the valves at .17 with a light pull. thanks again.
