Popping in the intake system is more likely an intake valve. A diesel compression check is needed, or a leak down test. I would crack fuel lines loose one at a time to discover which cylinder. Then I would pull the valve cover and look at the springs on that cyl. if they are OK, I would loosen the valve rockers, and remove the pushrods from that cyl. Then use a rubber compression test adapter,or gutted old injector) to make an air fitting to put air pressure (100psi or more is OK) and listen for air escaping. If it is an intake, it will hiss through the filter as it seems to be doing. if it hisses in the exhaust, it is the exhaust valve, if in the oil pan, it may be a scored piston. Check it soon or spend bigger bucks. Best of luck, JimN
