The tractor needs to spread apart far enough for YOU to to easily fit in between the two sections and have plenty of working room. Now is the time to replace any oil seals. You also might want to completely remove the flywheel and have it resurfaced at a machine shop, and also, this is the time to replace the starter ring gear on on the flywheel if it needs it. A new ring is fairly inexpensive, could prevent some headaches later.
