There is no output from a generator of a non-running engine and vice-versa. So somehow things weren't connected from the battery to the ignition circuit for starting although there apparently was connection from battery to the starter. After an engine is running, the ignition circuit will run on output from the generator and doesn't need the battery. Maybe this isn't fair - I'm an electrical engineer!
