Idling the engine for at least 2 minutes is the way to go. The bigger engines should idle for 3 minutes before shutdown or serious damage will result. Many big diesel truck engines are equiped with a device which will shut them down after a pre determined length of idle time. The idle time gives an engine time to distribute the heat evenly and avoids any local hot spots in the engine.
