Ok RKS I tried your idea. Left is pos. ground and briefly touched the gen. and batt. posts on the vr with a wire and got a spark.

Started it and it showed a little charge. Turned on the lights and it briefly went negative then went back to a light charge. So I removed the battery cable from the battery and she is still running. This is a high output generator and the battery is fully charged. So I reckon the regulator is just letting the generator charge as needed. If the generator were not working it would have died when I pulled off the cable.
