Jake brakes

I know this for tractors but it is about motors. When exiting the Indiana toll road last week there was a sign at the toll booth saying no Jake Brakes. I asked a semi driver and he said it was somthing to do with the cam or compression. Does anyone know how these brakes work? Thanks
