Cub PTO Grinding!

Dad just bought a semi-restored (engine only I believe) '49 Cub with an underbelly mower deck. While the motor/transmission run wonderfully, enganging the PTO using the small lever just to the rear/right of the gear shift results in a gear grind when you let the clutch out. I'm not a transmission man, per se, but fixing this is probably well within my ability if I have some clue towards what I should look for or adjust. Any help the group could provide would be greatly appreciated.
