I remember a few months back someone was having problems with a JD (yeah, I know) running hot, and the problem was that the engine had no water pump, like your A, and he had put in antifreeze first, then put water last, instead of mixing them first. Apparently the antifreeze and water never mised (no pump) and the antifreeze doesn't thermosiphon by itself very effectively, especially with a "cap" of water holding it down. This might be part of your problem.
