Go find an independent local auto electric repair shop, the kind of place hot rodders patronize. A good starter/alternator/generator fixer-upper should be able to rewind your starter to make it more compatible with 12 volts for about the cost of a new starter. If he's really sharp, your rebuilt starter will be better than a new one, 'cause he will be fussier about the fit of the bushings.
