Frequently hard shifting problems are related to clutch adjustment. With your hand depress the clutch pedal to the point when you get major resistance. The travel is referred to as free travel. Too much free travel results in the clutch disc not being released properly by the pressure plate. This situation can cause the shifting problem you referenced. Adjust the clutch to the point that you have about 1/2 inch of free travel and see if this corrects the problem. Always maintain enough free travel to prevent the release bearing from rotating when the clutch is all the way released. If this does not fix your tractor you will probably have to change the clutch.
