I have a 38 F14. My clutch suddenly quit disengaging. Pulled the inspection plate and checked the action on the throwout arm and bearing, looks good. I hauled the bellhousing off, couldn't see anything, except one throwout arm was a bit low. Adjusted everything, put it back together, clutch works great with the engine off, fired it up...No clutch. Hmmmmmmmmm, and one or two other comments. Blocked it good, left it running, crawled underneath and operated the clutch linkage while peering through the inspection hole. Odd, one of the throwout arms seems to be fully depressed all the time. Other two operating normally, but third one not moving, clutch not releasing. Hmmmmmmmm, one or two other observations, and the odd multi-syllabic hyphenated expletive. Take it BACK apart, pull the pressure plate off this time. All the arms are at the normal position, and seem to operate normally on the bench. Disassemble pressure plate completely. Nothing obvious. Look more carefully, notice hairline crack from center of clutch back plate to ball pivot on the adjusting screw seat for one of the throwout arms. Hmmmmmm. I have a spare back plate, cleaned it and looked it over, no crack. Soooooo, I'm operating on the theory that the crack was letting the backplate flex enough for the throwout arm to somehow pop off the pivot ball. Not sure why it works with engine off. I will try reassembling with the replacement back plate tomorrow and see what happens. Any experience, hints or suggestions?
