The purpose of the expansion plug is usually to fill the holes which were necessary to remove the casting sand from the castings when the casting was made. They also sometimes cover a hole where a passage has been drilled as Farmer mentioned. They are not for the purpose of freeze protection although they sometimes do work in this respect but not always. Harold H
