H electrical short

After pressure-washing decades of grease and grime off an H I recently purchased, I tried to start it and could see sparks coming from behind the plate just behind the foot starter button. I figured I probably created a short during the pressure washing, but am not sure. I left it to let everything dry, but now it won't turn at all. I'm pretty novice with tractors and even moreso with wiring. What items should I check?
