Went to an estate auction of a very elderly couple this past weekend, got bored during the sale of the household nick-nacks so I wandered out to the edge of the woods to the ‘used equipment storage area’, found something that caught my interest……………. It appears to be what is left of an early wire type baler, it is of the tag along variety, similar to the IH 50 series that I found in “150Years of IH”……The engine puzzles me though. It is labeled “ International Harvester Power Unit, serial MB5 03298”, casting date group 4-9-W, casting number 251341R3 L. It is an inline four cylinder , FLAT head, gas with magneto ignition. It was hand cranked as there is what appears to be a factory blank on the starter opening on the FORWARD face of the bell housing. Cooling is (was) by a self contained radiator of the thermal siphon variety. Okay all of you IH experts out there, what have I stumbled on to, when was it built, what were the specifications of the engine and lastly, should I just let this thing rest in peace in the bushes or is there any interest in it? Thanking you in advance, Eddie Petty, Courtland, Virginia.
