The drain plug is the way to go. When you return oil to the fill tube, you are adding air to the oil and it either foams, or it slowly increases the volume of the oil and begins to overflow. You can see this for yourself if you squirt water from your garden hose into a bucket, lots of air is added to the water. Once the bucket has a few inches of water in it, dip the hose end under the surface of the water and you will see the air/bubbles disappear. In short, always return oil from any source under the surface of the oil and air incorporation will be eliminated. Air incorporated into oil is extremely harmful to pumps. Even a small amount of air in the oil will cause increased pump wear, and the pump will be noisy, a "buzzing" sound.
