Doug, A simplified answer to your question is yes with explination. Whenever IHC came out with a new product, such as TA in the MTA, as use in the field brought out weak points or problems, IHC would put out an "Improvement Package" to fix these problems or improve the product. This was the equivilent to todays product recalls in the automotive industry. These improvement packages would be installed on the units in the field as necessary by the dealer and these or other improvements would also be incorporated in the production line or when new model tractors were introduced. Therefore, although not 100% of the parts of the 400 TA (or 450 & 560 also) are the same as the MTA TA, the unit will fit and work and is just an improved version of the original MTA TA. The rear ends were the same. Although there were some opitional gear ratios, I think the standard ratio was the same in the SM and the 400 and any speed changes were difference in tire size, although there could have been some minor gear ratio changes. You would have to check parts book to verify this. The engine speed was the same in both tractors, 1450 rated rpm, 1600 max no load rpm on both gasoline, LPG, and diesel models. Hope this answers your question. Harold H
