Lag angle is the difference between the point where the pawl locks the magneto shaft and the point where the impulse trips and the magneto fires. It is expressed in degrees. Lag angle only applies to high tension magnetos with impulse couplings. It actually serves to make the spark hotter and to retard the spark to avoid kickback when hand cranking the tractor.
