The Torque Amplifier (TA) is a planetary gearset that can be shifted in or out to add additional gear reduction. It is used in tillage when additional torque is required when you hit a "tough" spot. By engaging the TA you get additional torque at the cost of some speed. Since the TA can be engaged "on-the-go" you don't have to stop, downshift, start, get thru the "tough" spot, stop, upshift and go. It can also be engaged when starting a heavy load, then disengaged once the load is moving. The TA freewheels when overdriven, though, and thus does not allow you to use the motor to slow the tractor when going downhill, so it should always be disengaged when pulling a load downhill.
