John, There should be a plate on the left side (from the seat) of the clutch housing with the S/N and some other info. It will start with FBH followed by up to 6 numbers and there may be some suffixes on the end. Suffix X1 is for a gas engine. If you can't find the tag (sometimes they're missing) then the engine number should beon the side of the block slightly above the "ignition unit" which could be a distributor or a magneto or a mag converted to a distributor. The engine number should be the same or pretty close to the tractor S/N and give you a good indication of the year built.
