The system requirs pressure to operate, so it needed a regulator/diverter/priority valve to assure that steering came first. It is possible to make that happen I assume, But yours might not have drilled and tapped holes, or a priority vavve in it. It might be expedient to use a belt driven pump on the front of the engine.
