The Red and Big Fred have covered most of the bases. However, since you are removing the plugs, mark which cylinder each is removed from. Examine each plug very closely for variations from the others. This may indicate where the whitish smoke is coming from. If you heard a sucking noise when you loosen the gas cap you had a vent problem. Otherwise, you just created time for some fuel to seep back to the carb. and your fuel lines are clogged at the tank outlet or somewhere prior to the new filter ( the new filter could also be clogged) Good luck
