I used to enjoy driving my uncle's H about 2 miles up the road to refuel it at a small country store. I'd pull up to the gas pump, shut it off, go in to the store, get a dope, and wait for the H to backfire. Sometimes it would take a minute or two. Pretty loud too. So maybe the on-lookers were just disappointed that you didn't shut it off to see if it would backfire.
