12 volt cub won't charge!

I have, according to the serial #, a '50 model Farmall Cub, converted to a 12 volt system (not by me!). When it was converted, a flip switch was mounted that has four connections on the back. Only three wires are connected to it. I've found that when I start the tractor, if I make a connection between the two bottom posts on the switch (one has a wire connected to it, the other doesn't) sometimes the engine idles "differently" and this seems to charge the battery. Sometimes this doesn't work, though. If anyone has a schematic as to how the wiring should run with a 12 volt system I would greatly appreciate the help!
