It sounds like either two possible problems.. 1). You have some broken detent springs, so your shift fork will pop out of gear. 2). The front bearing cage bearings are wore out, and that is allowing the transmission main shaft to "flex" outward from the countershaft.. Some problems that may occur from either of these problems, are: 1.) The 2&3, 4&5 gears could be wore out from the excessive tolerances that could be caused by both possible problems mentioned above.. 2.) The main shaft may have some "chatter" marks on it from the possible wear caused by the possibility of irregular movement from the different gears.. 3.) The shift forks that work the grinding gears may also show excessive wear, which would allow the gear to "walk" itself back out of contact with its transmission driving gear.. I would say that best thing thing you could do, is remove the transmission deck, and just examine all of the above mentioned items for wear.. To check the front bearing cage bearings, all you have to do is grab the transmission main shaft, and see if you can lift up on it.. with new bearings, you can't budge it, so determine wear accordingly.. good luck..
