Im gona sound a little like a beginner, but i really like a fast drying, red oxide primer that you can get at Farm store for $20. gallon. I realy like a brand called PANDA mad in St Louis, Mo., but there ae others. I use it to prime bare metal, and rusty metal after i have gone over with a wire brush. I do this with implements that i spray on $25 enamel top coats, and tractors that i spray on $200 Dupont enamel. When i restore a tractor i brush on the red oxide to each part as i get it cleaned (axle housing, transmission, etc) after every thing is bolted together i sand it with 150 grit by hand and then spray a coat of the red oxide if needed. Sand with 220. After no brush marks or scratches i spray the Dupont. Use hardener to get glossy and dry faster.
