Jeff, we used to take the belt pulley cover off, or belt pulley, whichever was in the way. Looking back in there and moving the shift lever to place in fifth you will see it has a very short travel. In time the fork that shifts that gear wears some and pretty soon it just doesn't quite get it far enough and consequently kicks it out. It is a two man operation, one holds the lever in neutral and the other with an acetylene torch with heating tip installed heats that fork and with a bar lever it ahead a little, leave it cool some and try it, you should see how far it travels before and after to see the progress you have made. If it has a definite detent when you are putting it in gear now, that should take care of it. Do not get it red hot, you should be able to move it some without going that far.
