Yes, the TA can be a pain if it doesn't work properly. BUT with the new TA's (sprag instead of ramp and roller) you should only have to fix it once. Used properly the TA can run thousands of hours. On the older tractors it is not wise to run in low range for long periods of time because this will ruin the TA clutch throwout bearing, also it will freewheel downhill with the TA in low.

I have a Super MTA that the TA is out of so we just use it in direct drive and it works fine.

Tractors with green paint have problems too ya know.
