A TA is nice because you can change the speed of the tractor with out changing gears. The TA gives you 2 speed selections per gear or hi and low range. I agree with what others have said, TA's will go thousands of hours if used properly, but...almost nobody runs them right and ends up going through either the hassel of replacing it themselves or paying a lot of money for someone to do it for you which could cost over $2,000 for a $500 part to be installed, or atleast that is what it cost my boss to replace the TA on his 1466. What really kills a TA the fastest is using the TA to slow the tractor down while going either down hill or to slow it down before pulling into the yard from full throttle road speed with machinery behind. If you are talking about a hydro model like the 86, 100, etc... those are junk, about the only thing those are good for is pullung hay wagons around, my neighbor bought an 86 and the hydro was compleatly shot and got to the point where it could barely pull a hayrake around. It cost him $5,000 to have the hydro redone. You can't use them to plow or pull anything heavy with because they simply won't take it.
