By pump work do you mean injector pump or hydralic pump?? A new or rebuilt hydralic pump will cost from $300 to $500. A rebuild job on your injector pump can run up to $1000. I had a place locally quote me $750 for a WD-9 pump which would be similiar to a Super MTA diesel pump. The IH start on gas diesels can be VERY expensive to work on. A full rebuild can cost over $5000 depending on what could be wrong. Many of them that even run perfect still have a cracked head, possible cracked block, bad main and rod bearings, etc. I have seen rebuilt heads advertised in a parts catalog for around $850. Some of the start on gas diesels are next to impossible to find main bearings for, I know the WD-9 mains are difficult to find, I'm not sure about SMTA diesels. IF the tractor runs ok $1250 is not a bad deal. Some things to check are: does it start well on gas? The gas carburetor is simple to repair. Does it switch to diesel properly? Sometimes the linkages are not adjusted correctly. Check the oil in the injector pump, there is a petcock on the side - if diesel runs out you have problems with at least a seal or two inside the pump. Ask the owner if he changed the oil in the injector pump when he changed engine oil. Check the crankcase oil, diesel fuel in there is also another bad sign, antifreeze in the oil is a possible cracked head/blown gasket. General things with the tractor include clutch, TA, and live PTO unit, also the steering can get loose and shimmy at road speeds. Those can get costly to fix also. Just a few things to watch for.
