lights, short ?

I recently installed a new switch for my lights on my Farmall Super A. It's not a nice Farmall original, but a cheap toggle switch. I also ran a new wire to the lights themselves. My problem is that when I turn on the lights the ameter shows a discharge. This only happens, though, when it's cold, say, 30 or below. Could the cold temperature affect the current put out by the generator? Could it affect the operation of the VR? I am perplexed.
