Myself, and a buddy of mine have had similar problems with brand new IH temp guages for 2 Farmall H's. In the case of my H the guage did'nt work until I changed the thermostat (the old was was stuck and would'nt let the warm coolant get to the temp sensor). With my buddies H, he has to turn the temp sensor fitting every-so-often to make his guage work. I guess maybe its the nature of the beast with these new guages.
