If your 504 is a gas engine it doesn't have sleeves. I had one and it too appeared smaller than my 300 engine block. I have forgotten the exact cubic inch of the 504 as I didn't own mine very long. My 504 came with a farm I was buying. At the time I had planed to trade my 300 on a new 1066. After an afternoon with a 3 x16 trailer plow on both 300 and 504 the 504 got traded. A number of factors came to play on the decission, but the 300 performed better than 504 that day on plow. The cubic inch is close to the 152 in H or 169 in 300. Your pto at 540 is close to 2000 rpm on engine, which is 300-400 rpm higher than H or 300. I beleive rpm is where any extra 504 hp comes from. ps. biggest factor on trade was trade in value of 504 (3pt hitch) over 300.
