If you're into tractor pulling, better pick the brains of the guys on that board, and have a fat wallet. If you're farming with an absolutely stock M and a 450, you can likely get more out of each. Make sure they're tuned up properly, and that you're getting all the power the engine CAN make before doing anything drastic. An engine re-build that features a larger-diameter sleeve/piston set for the M will increase the displacement from 248 to 264 cid. This will gain quite a bit of power. Overhaul kits are available for both models that feature higher-compression pistons. This will gain more power. Your friendly CaseIH dealer can set you up with the "fire-crater" rebuild kits that will likely include not only the sleeve/piston set, but an improvement for the distributor as well. The M is capable of 50+ horsepower if set up right. The 450 is capable of producing even more. Another place to look for power is the governor. If you have the stock governor assembly, it's efficiency starts to drop as wear accumulates. A governor re-build will allow your tractor to use all the power it can make. If - and only IF your tractor is in sound mechanical shape, you might consider turning up the top governed speed of the engine. Opening up this setting to allow an old M to turn in the neighborhood of 2000 rpm is not unheard of, and they don't seem to suffer from it! I've got one that's been running that fast since the early 60's! It'll use more gas, but you'll plow more by the end of the day!
