460 pinion end play ?

Installing a different ring and pinion in a Farmall 460 that I'am restoring and I'am having problems getting the thing set. The main thing is the pinion is moving front to back about .030. Is this normal? IT manual says nothing about end play or how to adjust it. Bearing look good and moves about as much as the old one. There doesn't seem to be anyway to adjust it with shims to get the play out of the bearing. If this is normal do you adjust the backlash with the pinion pushed back or pulled forward? Thanks for any help.
