Serial number 1540? You probably are reading the engine RPM, which is also stamped on the serial plate. Most A/Bs have the serial plate riveted to the right side of the left seat bracket. The earliest ones had it riveted to the shield below the front of the operator's platform. The engine number is stamped on the right side of the block, top edge at the front. This would be BELOW the spark plug, as the plug is screwed into the head. Engine numbers and serial numbers matched until close to the end of A/B production (up to serial 201000).
