I agree with Zonie; it sounds like your tank has rust in it rather than dirt. Have a radiator shop boil it out and seal it; flush your fuel line and clean out your carb.

The only other thing I can think of offhand is that maybe your gas cap is either not sealing/keeping the dirt out or the rubber o-ring seal in it is shot and crumbling into your tank.
